Contemporary art collectors Ryan Kortman and Ben Gott will talk about why they collect, what they collect, and how, on January 9, from 7 – 9 pm in the UICA galleries. The discussion will be moderated by the Buying Friends exhibition curator, AJ Paschka. The evening will also be the debut of the Buying Friends exhibition catalog, which features photos of the included works, and essays from noted collectors and other Kortman associates. Kortman will be signing the catalog, which will be available for purchase that night.
Ben Gott said that he is looking forward to talking about his approach to contemporary art collecting. “Art really speaks to the intuitive side of me - there is a romance to collecting art. It effectively serves zero functional value if you want to look at it from a clinical standpoint. But when something speaks to you visually, emotionally, it is a pretty incredible luxury to have it, the original, in your home to walk past every morning. I also love connecting with and getting to know the artists personally. I have gained some awesome relationships out of it. And I believe the world is a better place with artists actively creating in all mediums and it’s an honor to participate in that process.”
Guests will enjoy fine pastries from Field and Fire Bakery, coffee from Direct Trade Coffee Company, cider, and Boxed Water.
