Art and the Mind


Join UICA and a panel of experts as we discuss the impacts of creative expression on the brain. New works by Rick Beerhorst which were inspired by the artists’ experience with mental illness will be the backdrop for this thought-provoking conversation moderated by Grand Rapids’ Poet Laureate, Marcel Price.

Meet the Panelists.

Marcel Price is a bi-racial North American writer, teaching artist, community advocate, spoken word poet, and motivational speaker. Fable The Poet is highly noted for his work with youth spreading mental health awareness using his own stories to consume the audience. He is an official partner of Mental Health America, and is known across the nation for crowd-interactive features that leave those attending enlightened and empowered.

Nessa McCasey is a poetry therapist, a mentor, and an Executive Director of the International Academy for Poetry Therapy which is a credentialing organization for the profession of poetry therapy. She offers online writing groups, in-person groups, and one-on-one or couples coaching through therapeutic writing. As the parent of an adult on the autism spectrum, she serves the wider community as a Board Member of Network 180.

Ivan Jenson is a fine artist, novelist, and contemporary poet who lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His artwork has been featured in Art in America, Art News, and Interview magazine, and has sold works at auction at Christie’s. Jenson's poetry is widely published (with over 600 poems published in the US, UK and Europe) in a variety of literary media. To learn more about Jension, visit

Sandy Dettmann, MD, DABAM, FASAM teaches at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and Grand Valley State University, serves on the board of Kent County Medical Society, and is a delegate to the Michigan State Medical Society. Dettmann’s personal experience with chronic illness and homelessness inspired her passion for treating patients experiencing addiction.
