Color of the Year Presented by X-Rite Pantone

Color of the Year is a group exhibition of original art works each utilizing the 2018 PANTONE® Color of the Year, 18-3838 Ultra Violet, as a major component of execution or as a point of departure.

The PANTONE® Color of the Year is a symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.

The show also explores the influence that fine art has on color use in the realms of fashion, interiors, and industrial design. Color of the Year leads viewers on a journey from inspiration to realization with work by local, national, and international artists.

In addition to original works of art, Color of the Year will also feature examples of design work by local, national, and international artists and artisans, with a focus on Michigan-based design and manufacturing.

Now Seeking Artists.

UICA is currently seeking artists to exhibit their work as part of Color of the Year. Works can be created in a variety of mediums and should be completed in the last two years. Finished works as well as sketches of proposed works will be considered.

Application Deadline: January 11, 2018

About PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet

Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead and the discoveries beyond where we are now.

We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE18-3838 Ultra-Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.
— Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute

The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own. Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality.

Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets. Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The color is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection.
