UICA is proud to be part of Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD). We value our connection to the KCAD students, and are excited to partner with other universities and colleges to extend similar opportunities and benefits to all students in the greater Grand Rapids area.
Students from KCAD, Ferris State University (FSU), and Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) receive partnership benefits as part of their enrollment. Students from all fields of study at all colleges and universities are encouraged to experience and explore the facilities and programs at UICA.
GRCC students receive free gallery admission with student ID as part of Go See GR.
KCAD and FSU Students
KCAD and FSU students enjoy all UICA Member benefits with student ID.
We welcome students from any school, college, or university to visit UICA to explore The Galleries, find unique gifts and supplies in The Shop, watch a film in The Theater, create something in The Studio, or attend our community events and programming (standard adult pricing applies). Discounted Student Memberships are also available. You can also encourage your instructor to host a class or tour at UICA; See the “Tours and Class Visits” section of this page for more information.
UICA encourages all educators to think of our facilities and programming as a way to expand your classroom. We welcome faculty and staff from schools of all levels of learning to consider UICA as a destination for group tours, field trips, or extensions of your curricula. We work with educators to custom-tailor experiences that meet the needs of the desired learning opportunity. From self-guided or docent-led tours to hands-on workshops, the Community Programs team at UICA strives to provide engaging and meaningful experiences to interact with art and become more deeply involved in the personal and collective creative process.
UICA staff partners with faculty from FSU, GRCC, KCAD, and several other institutions to create one-day learning projects or semester-long engagement. We would love to hear your collaboration ideas. For more information or to plan your experience, please contact email@example.com.
Tours and Class Visits
UICA is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, and is available for class visits and tours, by appointment, during those same times. We strongly encourage you to contact us to plan a visit at least one month in advance; this allows us to work together to design an excursion that supports your goals, curriculum, and educational opportunity needs. For more information or to plan your experience, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Opportunities for Students
There are several opportunities for students to get involved at UICA, here are just a few you might be interested in:
FRESH PICK - more
The UICA Fresh Pick award is given annually to a member of KCAD’s graduating class who shows a high level of talent and potential. In addition to being recognized with the designation of the title “Fresh Pick Artist," the winner is awarded a solo exhibition at UICA.
CREATE PUBLIC ART, EXIT SPACE PROJECT (ESP) - more
UICA ESP is open to all artists 18 years of age and older - students can apply to paint a mural, create graffiti, display wheat-pasted posters and prints, adhere stickers, project videos… anything you’d like, you can propose it. ESP respects the indefinable genre of Street Art, so all mediums are considered. Click to learn more.
THE LOFT - more
Because KCAD & FSU students are UICA Members, students of those institutions have access to The Loft presented by Herman Miller. The Loft is a stunning and sophisticated space with an incredible view of the city and is open throughout the year (except when closed for private events). The Loft is perfect for study sessions, squirreling away with a good book (and a stunning view), meeting up with other students and UICA Members, or simply relaxing and recharging. The Loft offers a continually changing exhibition of local and regional artists’ work, a private kitchenette, and beautiful lounge furniture and boardroom seating provided by Herman Miller.
THE SHOP - more
The Shop at UICA is a collaborative space and store open to the community. The Shop carries handmade home goods, art and design books, and artwork by local and regional artists and designers, as well as a selection of art supplies.
As a student, you can visit The Shop at UICA for inspiration, to stock-up on tools of the trade, and find gifts and unique wares. Student-Members receive 10% off of purchases from The Shop.
You can also apply to sell your work. To find out more about selling your work in The Shop at UICA, click here.
BECOME A VOLUNTEER, DOCENT, OR STUDENT WORKER - more
