Exhibiting Artist Feature: Morgan Hughes

Morgan Hughes is a left-handed multidisciplinary artist living in Ypsilanti, MI. Her work is influenced by the ways we, as people, interact with the the space we fill, and how it shapes us.

How would you describe your work?

It's like when someone is telling you a story and it trails off completely and you never really figure out where they were going with it.

You're exhibiting as part of Color of the Year Presented by Pantone and X-Rite. How were you inspired by Ultra Violet in the works you've created and was this a departure from how you typically work?

I've never created a large scale installation of my personal work, so this was definitely a bit different for me. As color goes, Ultra Violet has been surprisingly inspiring! I had originally planned to simply work with the color, but it kind of became what the entire piece was about.

Do you have a piece of work which stands out in your mind as something you are exceptionally proud of or that is particularly important to you?

I did a piece my senior year of college that was completely different than what I was producing in classes, and it was kind of eye opening. I think it set me on the course I am today, working in multiple mediums, and sort of just following the mantra of "I'll figure it out"

Who or what has been the biggest single influence on your way of thinking?

The environment, I think. It's so sensitive and so resilient and can devour entire man-made structures in as much time as it took to build them. I want to be more like the environment.

What are you passionate about besides your work?

Movie scores, podcasts, being in the woods, and learning about the invisible things that make us who we are.

What's the best piece of advice you have heard and repeat to others?

"It's not about you"

Where can we find more of your work? Is your work available for sale or exhibiting elsewhere?

I have a website that I'm constantly updating, so the best place to find me is probably instagram (@mergenhues).
