UICA SENSE: ArtPrize Seven

This year, UICA has selected six site-responsive projects to showcase in six distinct locations within UICA’s exhibition space. The work included in SENSE engages that which is at the root of all experience, the things that make us who we are, that allow us to experience and learn from the world around us: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch and perhaps even perception beyond the five senses; intuition.

The work included in SENSE may activate any number of the senses and guests are encouraged to consider their own sensory experience when responding to the work.

UICA ArtPrize Hours:

Monday: 5pm — 8pm
Tuesday—Saturday: 12 noon — 9pm
Sunday: 12 noon — 6pm

About ArtPrize

ArtPrize® is a radically open, independently organized international art competition and a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. For 19 days, three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, become an open playing field where anyone can find a voice in the conversation about what is art and why it matters. Art from around the world pops up in every inch of downtown, and it’s all free and open to the public.

SYMPHONY OF GESTURES - Physical Arrangement for String Quartet.

Performance in the UICA Galleries

'Symphony of Gestures' has been nominated for the Public Vote Top 20 in the Time-based category. We've added two additional performances:

Tuesday, 10/6: 5:00 pm

Thursday, 10/8: 5:00 pm

Performed by Zachary Graft, violin; Jenna Michael, violin; Elizabeth Boyce, viola; Willis Koa, cello.

Performances last a total of 10-15 minutes

Encompassing many of Sara Dittrich and Benjamin Buchanan's collaborations, Symphony of Gestures will feature the performance piece Physical Arrangement for String Quartet in which musicians will perform a new composition created by Benjamin Buchanan while placed in strenuous/precarious positions throughout the designated space.

The composition and choreography brings into question factors ingrained in “concert music” recital traditions through the use of absurdity, as well as amplifies each musician’s body in space and in relation to one another.
