ArtPrize Ten: UICA Outside

ArtPrize Ten: UICA Outside
September 8
- October 7, 2018

UICA Outside graphic

UICA’s ArtPrize exhibition moves beyond the galleries and into the community.

UICA’s mandate as a non-collecting contemporary arts organization is to stay nimble and open to new possibilities and opportunities as they present themselves. We appreciate the large audience ArtPrize brings to Grand Rapids, and the chance that gives us to assemble a dynamic group of artists who, working with community members, can make a long-lasting impact on the vibrancy and character of their neighborhoods.
— Miranda Krajniak, UICA Executive Director

UICA Outside expands UICA’s impact city-wide and connects visitors to the vibrant neighborhoods that surround downtown Grand Rapids.

Featuring five public projects in three different neighborhoods, UICA Outside draws together diverse artists, property owners, and Grand Rapids stakeholders to create artworks that are exciting and accessible to all. Each neighborhood features large-scale works created by artists who reside and engage within their respective community or who have designed artworks with neighborhood input and a focus on representation and expression. These public works activate what were once quiet and overlooked areas into powerful reflections of our neighbors, and create welcoming corridors and gathering places.

The dynamic exhibition is an expansion of UICA’s current initiative the Exit Space Project, which connects art with public spaces year-round and strengthens UICA’s mission to support a creative community.

Compo's mural is inspired by his Anishinaabe heritage and features vibrant, iconic symbolism that is significant to the Anishinaabe tribes.

Thank you

Thanks to the generous support of our community members, UICA raised $5,225 in support of placing public murals throughout the city during a crowdfunding campaign that took place in May of 2018.

Because we were able to reach our goal, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) contributed an additional $5,000 grant to the project.

Funds raised allow us to pay artists' stipends and fund materials like paint and brushes, and the scaffolding and lifts that it takes to cover a large space, as well as permits and insurance.

A special thanks to ArtPrize, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. (DGRI), The Frey Foundation, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Stonesthrow, Creston Market, Childress & Associates, CD Holdings & Sun Title, the Baxter Neighborhood Association, GR Parks & Recreation Department, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, and the Grand Rapids Public Museum.
